The Murray Ohio Manufacturing Company began in Cleveland, Ohio. Its founder was J. W. Murray. Originally, the Murray Company manufactured machines intended for both residential and commercial arm usage. Riding tractors or riding mowers became the company's mainstay along with garden tractors. The machines gained popularity due to the inexpensive price tag.

Unfortunately, Murray Mowing ran into extensive financial problems in the early 21st century. As a result, Briggs and Stratton purchased Murrays in 2004, acquiring the Murray brand name. Now, Briggs & Stratton produce Murray lawnmowers. All contain the well-known Briggs & Stratton engine.

Murray Mowers come in a wide range of mowers designed to address the various levels of lawn maintenance and operator capability. There is the Murray standard for beginners in lawn care, the Murray Select for the next stage up and Murray Performance at the top of the proverbial lawnmower heap.

Within the rage, you will discover the various types available from walk-behind mowers for residential use to riding mowers for landscape professionals. In addition, the mowers have bags and mulch for your convenience. Small yard mowers can be riding or walk-behinds. The cuts can range from a small 15-inch to a 30 -inch to a large 42-inch. The Performance Riding Mower offers as high as a 46- inch cut. Motor horsepower also varies, ranging from 5.5 in standard machines to 22 in Murray Performance riding machines. Twenty-two inches seems to bête norm for the cutting edge of the walk-behind machines.

Plastic wheels or steel ones make the mower roll. Walk-behinds, usually, have plastic, riding models have steel. How well plastic wheels function, depends upon your personal experience. Plastic wheels, however, are not known for durability in Murray's case.

What is tough and powerful is the engine in a Murray machine. Owned by Briggs & Stratton, it is only natural that Murray mowers sport the quality Briggs & Stratton engine. While the body may fall apart due to wear and tear and the plastic wheels decide to deteriorate, the motor will continue to operate.
